The Mission Community has brought MEDA+ Mission Housing together to build The Marvel 

December 7, 2023-For the first time in the history of the Mission, the community has brought two of Mission District’s community developers together to develop The Marvel in The Mission. 

“After a decade-long struggle, the working class Mission Community celebrates the realization of what too often we were told was too bold of a demand. This victory is a testament to community action, sacrifice, and the unwavering demand for 100% affordable housing at 16th and Mission from day one. Collective determination, community action and unity has been the driving force behind this triumph and making it possible to draw a line in the sand against the Monster in the Mission and the continued displacement pushed forward by a speculative and violent real estate industry. Today, as we mark this milestone, we recognize that it’s people power that moves mountains, defeats monsters and makes what was once seen as impossible possible.” – Maria Zamudio of the Plaza16 Coalition 

After 10 years of collective action, resistance and organizing, The Marvel is officially one step closer to becoming a reality. On December 6th, The Office of Housing and Community Development announced that alongside the community Mission Economic Development Agency and Mission Housing Corporation will lead the development of approximately 350 new 100% affordable housing units on 1979 Mission Street. 

This historic moment was only made possible through the resilience and tireless efforts of working-class, low-income and immigrant community members who collectively pushed this victory forward. Guided by our values of resilience, regeneration and interdependence together alongside the Mission community, developers and community organizations, we will continue to lead the efforts in creating 100% affordable and dignified housing for all and make the Marvel in the Mission a reality.

La Comunidad de la Misión ha reunido MEDA+ Mission Housing para construir La Maravilla

7 de diciembre de 2023: por primera vez en la historia de Mission, la comunidad ha reunido a dos de los desarrolladores comunitarios del Distrito de Mission para desarrollar La Maravilla en La Misión.

“Después de una lucha de una década, la clase trabajadora de la comunidad de la Misión celebra la realización de lo que muchas veces nos dijeron que era una demanda demasiado audaz. Esta victoria es un testimonio de la acción comunitaria, el sacrificio y la demanda inquebrantable de viviendas 100% asequibles. en la calle 16 y Mission desde el primer día. La determinación colectiva, la acción comunitaria y la unidad han sido la fuerza impulsora detrás de este triunfo y han hecho posible trazar una línea en la arena contra el Monstruo en la Misión y el continuo desplazamiento impulsado por una sociedad especulativa y violenta industria inmobiliaria. Después de 10 años de acción colectiva, resistencia y organización, La Maravilla está oficialmente un paso más cerca de convertirse en realidad. El 6 de diciembre, la Oficina de Vivienda y Desarrollo Comunitario anunció que, junto con la comunidad, la Agencia de Desarrollo Económico de Mission y la Corporación de Vivienda de Mission liderarán el desarrollo de aproximadamente 350 nuevas unidades de vivienda 100% asequibles en 1979 Mission Street.

Este momento histórico sólo fue posible gracias a la resiliencia y los esfuerzos incansables de los miembros de la comunidad de inmigrantes, de clase trabajadora y de bajos ingresos que colectivamente impulsaron esta victoria. Guiados por nuestros valores de resiliencia, regeneración e interdependencia, junto con la comunidad de la Misión, los desarrolladores y las organizaciones comunitarias, continuaremos liderando los esfuerzos para crear viviendas 100% asequibles y dignas para todos y hacer realidad la Maravilla de la Misión.

LAND TRANSFER IN MOTION FOR 100% AFFORDABLE HOUSING

November 17, 2021 — After 7 years of community organizing and fierce struggle, the site at 1979 Mission Street is set to officially transfer to the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development for the development of 100% affordable housing following a decision by the SF Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance committee. 

“This victory shows the power of community and unity”, said Brenda Cordoba, Plaza 16 Coalition member and community activist. “We are committed to staying true to our values and commitment to creating 100% affordable housing and keeping the pressure in creating subsidies to make the Marvel in the Mission accessible and affordable.”

Making the Marvel a reality has been a commitment of the Plaza 16 Coalition throughout the fight against the Monster which was officially defeated last February when the land at 1979 Mission first went on the market.  At the Budget and Finance Committee the Plaza Coalition will continue working towards making the Marvel a reality by urging the committee to accept this land and continue to partner with the community. 

The transfer of this land would have not been possible without the ongoing efforts of community members and organizations who remained steadfast in the fight for defeating the Monster and creating the Marvel. The process has and will remain rooted in the community most impacted by displacement and the lack of deeply affordable and dignified housing.  Our work is not over and we step into the next stage of ensuring that the “Marvel in the Mission” is a deeply affordable community developed project knowing we have already made impossible things possible.

The Plaza 16 Coalition is a grassroots alliance supported by over 100 organizations, including Faith in Action, Housing Rights Committee, The Women’s Building, MEDA, and Mission Housing. We build the power of communities most impacted by the gentrification crisis in the Mission, and support planning processes that assert grassroots decision-making, and the right of people to demand urban policies and practices which support their own security and existence in the neighborhood.

TRASPASO DE TIERRA EN MOVIMIENTO PARA VIVIENDA 100% ASEQUIBLE

17 de noviembre del 2021 – Después de 7 años de organización comunitaria y de una lucha incansable del pueblo, el sitio en 1979 Mission Street se transferirá oficialmente a la Oficina de Vivienda y Desarrollo Comunitario de la Alcaldía para el desarrollo de viviendas 100% asequibles siguiendo una decisión de la Junta de Supervisores de Presupuesto y Finanzas de SF. comité. 

“Esta victoria muestra el poder de la comunidad y la unidad”, dijo Brenda Córdoba, miembro de la Coalición Plaza 16 y activista comunitaria. “Estamos comprometidos a mantenernos fieles a nuestros valores y compromiso de crear viviendas 100% asequibles y mantener la presión en la creación de subsidios para hacer que Marvel in the Mission sea accesible y asequible”.

Hacer que la “Maravilla en la Misión” sea una realidad ha sido un compromiso de la Coalición Plaza 16 a lo largo de la lucha contra el Monstruo de la Misión que fue derrotado oficialmente en febrero pasado cuando la tierra en 1979 Mission St. salió al mercado por primera vez. En el Comité de Presupuesto y Finanzas, Coalición Plaza continuará trabajando para hacer realidad nuestra Maravilla e instar al comité a aceptar esta tierra y continuar trabajando con la comunidad. 

La transferencia de esta tierra no habría sido posible sin los esfuerzos continuos de los miembros de la comunidad y las organizaciones que se mantuvieron firmes en la lucha por derrotar al Monstruo y crear la Maravilla. El proceso tiene y seguirá estando arraigado en la comunidad más afectada por el desplazamiento y la falta de viviendas dignas y profundamente asequibles. Nuestro trabajo no ha terminado y pasamos a la siguiente etapa para asegurarnos de que “La Maravilla en la Misión” sea un proyecto desarrollado por la comunidad profundamente asequible, sabiendo que ya hemos hecho posibles cosas imposibles.

La Coalición Plaza 16 es una alianza de base apoyada por más de 100 organizaciones, incluidas Faith in Action, Housing Rights Committee, The Women’s Building, MEDA y Mission Housing. Construimos el poder de las comunidades más afectadas por la crisis de gentrificación en la Misión y apoyamos procesos de planificación que afirman la toma de decisiones de base y el derecho de las personas a exigir políticas y prácticas urbanas que respalden su propia seguridad y existencia en el vecindario.

Update: It’s been 9 months since we were together celebrating in person. Now after 6+ years of community organizing and people power the Monster in the Mission is officially a nightmare of the past and we are one step closer to building the Marvel in the Mission with 100% affordable housing!  

As a result of the pressure from neighbors, community members, tenants, families, and students, Maximus Real Estate Partners was forced to sell the site at 1979 Mission Street. Crescent Heights purchased the site and it has officially been handed over to the city to construct affordable housing developers, MEDA and Mission Housing with the guidance of the community to construct the Marvel in the Mission. 

The time is now for us to collectively begin the planning process and create the Marvel, a deeply affordable housing project crafted by our community! This has always been a community led process and will continue to be so. We thank all the people who for the past 6 years have voluntarily contributed  time, attended meetings, rallies, have spoken at hearings, have made art, painted banners, sang songs, have cooked and served food, have informed their neighbors, and so much more that brought us to this win. Together, we defeated avaricious developers and together we will build the Marvel!

Actualización: Han pasado 9 meses desde que celebramos junt@s en persona. Ahora, después de más de 6 años de organización comunitaria y el poder de la gente, El Monstro en la Mission es oficialmente una pesadilla del pasado y estamos un paso más cerca de construir La Maravilla con viviendas 100% asequibles.

Como resultado de la presión de los vecinos, miembros de la comunidad, inquilinos, familias y estudiantes, Maximus Real Estate Partners se vio obligado a vender el sitio en 1979 Mission Street. Crescent Heights compró el sitio y oficialmente se entregó a la ciudad para que construya desarrolladores de viviendas asequibles, MEDA y Mission Housing con la guía de la comunidad para construir Marvel in the Mission.

¡Ahora es el momento de que comencem@s colectivamente el proceso de planificación y creemos Marvel, un proyecto de vivienda profundamente asequible diseñado por nuestra comunidad! Este siempre ha sido un proceso dirigido por la comunidad y seguirá siéndolo. Agradecem@s a todas las personas que durante los últimos 6 años han contribuido voluntariamente con su tiempo, han asistido a reuniones, mítines, han hablado en audiencias, han hecho arte, han pintado pancartas, cantaron canciones, han cocinado y servido comida, han informado a sus vecin@s, y mucho más que nos trajo a esta victoria. ¡Junt@s, derrotam@s a los desarrolladores avariciosos y junt@s construirem@s La Maravilla!
