LAND TRANSFER IN MOTION FOR 100% AFFORDABLE HOUSING
November 17, 2021 — After 7 years of community organizing and fierce struggle, the site at 1979 Mission Street is set to officially transfer to the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development for the development of 100% affordable housing following a decision by the SF Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance committee.
“This victory shows the power of community and unity”, said Brenda Cordoba, Plaza 16 Coalition member and community activist. “We are committed to staying true to our values and commitment to creating 100% affordable housing and keeping the pressure in creating subsidies to make the Marvel in the Mission accessible and affordable.”
Making the Marvel a reality has been a commitment of the Plaza 16 Coalition throughout the fight against the Monster which was officially defeated last February when the land at 1979 Mission first went on the market. At the Budget and Finance Committee the Plaza Coalition will continue working towards making the Marvel a reality by urging the committee to accept this land and continue to partner with the community.
The transfer of this land would have not been possible without the ongoing efforts of community members and organizations who remained steadfast in the fight for defeating the Monster and creating the Marvel. The process has and will remain rooted in the community most impacted by displacement and the lack of deeply affordable and dignified housing. Our work is not over and we step into the next stage of ensuring that the “Marvel in the Mission” is a deeply affordable community developed project knowing we have already made impossible things possible.

The Plaza 16 Coalition is a grassroots alliance supported by over 100 organizations, including Faith in Action, Housing Rights Committee, The Women’s Building, MEDA, and Mission Housing. We build the power of communities most impacted by the gentrification crisis in the Mission, and support planning processes that assert grassroots decision-making, and the right of people to demand urban policies and practices which support their own security and existence in the neighborhood.

TRASPASO DE TIERRA EN MOVIMIENTO PARA VIVIENDA 100% ASEQUIBLE
17 de noviembre del 2021 – Después de 7 años de organización comunitaria y de una lucha incansable del pueblo, el sitio en 1979 Mission Street se transferirá oficialmente a la Oficina de Vivienda y Desarrollo Comunitario de la Alcaldía para el desarrollo de viviendas 100% asequibles siguiendo una decisión de la Junta de Supervisores de Presupuesto y Finanzas de SF. comité.
“Esta victoria muestra el poder de la comunidad y la unidad”, dijo Brenda Córdoba, miembro de la Coalición Plaza 16 y activista comunitaria. “Estamos comprometidos a mantenernos fieles a nuestros valores y compromiso de crear viviendas 100% asequibles y mantener la presión en la creación de subsidios para hacer que Marvel in the Mission sea accesible y asequible”.

El proceso tiene y seguirá estando arraigado en la comunidad más afectada por el desplazamiento y la falta de viviendas dignas y profundamente asequibles. Nuestro trabajo no ha terminado y pasamos a la siguiente etapa para asegurarnos de que “La Maravilla en la Misión” sea un proyecto desarrollado por la comunidad profundamente asequible, sabiendo que ya hemos hecho posibles cosas imposibles.
